Current status of research and development at Japan Atomic Energy Agency

Fujita, Yuji; Yoshii, Kenji

Denki Hyoron, 101(2), p.43 - 58, 2016/02

Japan Atomic Energy Agency (JAEA) is conducting many kinds of research activities, including fundamental and applied researches, and project studies to create novel technologies and industries. In particular, the activities are mainly focused on the R&D studies for recovery from the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear NPS accident, safety researches, the development of fast reactor cycles, and high-level radioactive waste disposal. This article gives reviews on current status of the researches of JAEA in this fiscal year.

Broader Approach activities and the progress of the research

Ninomiya, Hiromasa

Denki Hyoron, 96(6), p.17 - 23, 2011/06

Broader Approach (BA) activities are the joint project of Japan and Europe, which advances it on a parallel with ITER for the early realization of the fusion energy. It was decided by MEXT in October, 2005 to enforce IFERC and IFMIF/EVEDA in Rokkasho-mura and satellite tokamak in Naka-shi. After that, fusion energy agreement of Japan and Europe was concluded for BA activities. Japan Atomic Energy Agency was specified as Japan domestic agency by MEXT. This work for the BA activities has an important role of ITER support and study for DEMO reactor.

Measurement of ionizing radiation

Tanimura, Yoshihiko

Denki Hyoron, 95(5), p.61 - 66, 2010/05

There exist ionizing radiation from ground or galaxy around us. Recently, the usage of ionizing radiation is increasing in the industrial and medical fields as medical treatment, nondestructive inspection and so on. However, we cannot sense the radiation and many one have no idea to detect them around our surrounding. This article describes radiation measurement and calibration technique of radiation detectors.

Collection of significant metals with graft adsorbent; Necessary security of nonproduced significant metals in Japan

Tamada, Masao

Denki Hyoron, 93(5), p.54 - 58, 2008/05

There are ultra low concentrations of uranium and scandium in seawater and hot spring water, respectively. Metal adsorbents prepared by radiating-induced graft polymerization are suitable for the metal collections since their handlings are easy. The uranium of 1 kg was recovered from the seawater at Mutsu area. Then, mooring system of braid type adsorbent was developed to reduce the recovery cost of uranium from seawater. The uranium spot price went up recently, and the uranium recovery from seawater attracts the attention. Experimental collection of scandium from the hot spring water has been carried out at Kusatsu Onsen in Gunma prefecture. The development of scandium collection technology will induce its new versatile usages.

Uranium resources' outlook and the key factors for its timely development

Kobayashi, Takao

Denki Hyoron, 92(11), p.16 - 20, 2007/11

Uranium spot price is steeply up and down recently. However, since spot price had not always reflected the true market situation properly, we must carefully analyze the essential key factors, such as nuclear generation capacity trends, uranium resources availability, trends of exploration and development activities and the situation of secondary uranium sources, to outlook the future uranium resources' supply and demand. Even uranium resources are exist enough to sustain world nuclear generation for more than one century, as the generation capacity are projected to be growing steadily and existing important uranium mines will be exhausted one after another after 2020, it is very necessary to discover new deposits continuously and to develop new mines timely with long term prospects and strategy.

Current status and evolution of nuclear fusion development; Aiming at the achievement of the nuclear fusion energy

Araki, Masanori; Kamada, Yutaka; Mori, Masahiro; Nishitani, Takeo

Denki Hyoron, 92(10), p.38 - 44, 2007/10

A general view of the current status and evolution of nuclear fusion research and development in JAEA is reviewed. Concretely, the outline is shown about the fruitful results of research that are obtaining mainly on an experimental device JT-60 concisely, and the international thermonuclear experimental reactor ITER project (design and technical R&D activities, and details for construction) as well as a Broader Approach Activities for aiming at the achievement of a DEMO reactor and of a nuclear fusion energy.
